Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion

3 min read·CUET PG Economics

1) Why these measures matter

Statistical methods summarize data to understand:

  • the “typical” value (central tendency),
  • the spread/variability (dispersion), which are essential for economics data interpretation.

2) Measures of Central Tendency

2.1 Arithmetic Mean (AM)

For ungrouped data x1,x2,...,xnx_1, x_2, ..., x_n:

xˉ=∑xin\bar{x} = \frac{\sum x_i}{n}

For frequency distribution:

xˉ=∑fixi∑fi\bar{x} = \frac{\sum f_i x_i}{\sum f_i}

Merits: uses all values; algebraic properties.
Demerits: affected by extreme values (outliers).

2.2 Median

Median is the middle value when data are arranged in order.

  • If nn is odd: median is (n+12)th\left(\frac{n+1}{2}\right)^{th} item.
  • If nn is even: median is average of (n2)th\left(\frac{n}{2}\right)^{th} and (n2+1)th\left(\frac{n}{2}+1\right)^{th} items.

Merits: robust to outliers; useful for skewed distributions.
Demerits: ignores magnitude of most observations.

Grouped data median (concept)
Median class contains N2\frac{N}{2}th item.

Median=L+(N2−c.f.f)hMedian = L + \left(\frac{\frac{N}{2}-c.f.}{f}\right)h

Where:

  • LL = lower boundary of median class
  • NN = total frequency
  • c.f.c.f. = cumulative frequency before median class
  • ff = frequency of median class
  • hh = class width

2.3 Mode

Mode is the value that occurs most frequently.

Grouped data mode (concept)
Modal class has highest frequency.

Mode=L+(f1−f02f1−f0−f2)hMode = L + \left(\frac{f_1 - f_0}{2f_1 - f_0 - f_2}\right)h

Where:

  • f1f_1 = frequency of modal class
  • f0f_0 = frequency of class preceding modal class
  • f2f_2 = frequency of class succeeding modal class
