Literary Terms: Plot

2 min read·CUET PG English

1) Definition (CUET-ready)

Plot is the structured arrangement of events in a narrative—how a story’s actions are selected, ordered, and connected through causality, conflict, and resolution.

A key distinction:

  • Story = events in chronological order (what happens).
  • Plot = how the narrative organises those events to create meaning, suspense, and thematic design.

2) Core elements of plot (high-yield)

A) Exposition

Introduces setting, characters, initial situation.

B) Rising action / complication

Conflicts emerge, stakes increase.

C) Climax

Turning point or peak of conflict.

D) Falling action

Consequences unfold.

E) Resolution / denouement

Conflicts settle (or remain unresolved in some modern forms).

CUET frequently asks these terms in match/definition format.

3) Plot structures (types)

A) Linear plot

Events proceed sequentially.
